A sleek porcelain patio with large format paving slabs, elegant curved brickwork border, and lush surrounding garden.

This large-format porcelain patio in Sevenoaks wraps around the rear of a modern detached home, replacing the original builder’s paving with a clean ivory-toned finish and a curved red-brick border that turns an awkward L-shaped garden into a generous entertaining space.

Brief & Design

The clients wanted to make the most of a wide rear garden by pushing the patio out from the house, giving themselves a usable outdoor room for a large dining table and a second seating area. The standard builder’s paving was lifted and replaced with large-format ivory porcelain slabs for a sharp, contemporary look, and a curved red-brick border was introduced to soften the line between patio and lawn and tie into the red brick of the house plinth.

Groundwork & Base

The old patio was lifted and the footprint extended out into the garden. A full MOT Type 1 sub-base was laid and compacted across the whole area, with clear falls set away from the house elevation so surface water runs off into the garden rather than pooling against the brickwork.

Porcelain Laying

Porcelain is unforgiving — it needs a full mortar bed, a priming slurry on the back of each slab, and careful cutting with a wet saw. Every slab was bedded, primed and set with consistent tight joints before being grouted with a brush-in porcelain-compatible jointing compound. The result is a dead-flat, slip-resistant patio that won’t move or stain.

Brick Border & Lawn Edge

The curved edge was set out by hand with a string line and pegs, then built in soldier-course red bricks to match the tones on the house. The adjoining lawn was reshaped to follow the curve for a clean finish, and the flowerbed was re-turned and replanted to frame the new patio.

Final Result

The finished patio is a proper extension of the house into the garden — bright, modern, and generously sized, with the curved brick border taking the edge off the straight lines and warming the whole scheme up against the red brick plinth of the property.
