Stone Slab Garden Patio with Wooden Shelter, Sevenoaks
A charming garden patio with durable stone slab paving and a practical wooden shelter, perfect for outdoor living in any weather.
This rear garden in Sevenoaks was reworked into a generous Indian sandstone patio with a purpose-built timber shelter over the seating area — giving the clients a large outdoor entertaining space they can use in all weather, from spring lunches to sunny evenings when the rain rolls in.
Brief & Design
The brief was to replace a tired, patchy old patio with a single large paved zone that wrapped around the rear of the house and, crucially, included a covered area so the space wasn’t lost the moment the weather turned. A pitched timber pergola with a clear polycarbonate roof was chosen — letting light through while keeping rain off — and sized to cover a full dining table with chairs pulled out.
Groundwork & Base
The existing patio and beds were stripped out, the area excavated to depth and a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base laid across the whole footprint. A low retaining brick wall was built along the garden side to take the small change in level and frame the patio on the garden edge.
Paving & Pergola
The patio was laid in riven Indian sandstone slabs in a mixed-size random pattern on a full mortar bed, with brushed-in jointing compound for a clean, no-weed finish. The timber pergola was built on pressure-treated posts set into concrete pads, with a pitched rafter roof fixed with clear corrugated polycarbonate sheets — enough pitch to shed water, enough clarity to keep the space bright.
Final Result
The finished patio gives the family a proper outdoor room — a large dining area that stays usable in a shower, a wider paved zone for seating and BBQs, and a natural sandstone finish that weathers in beautifully over time.
