A complete rear garden transformation in Medway — 90m² of Kandla Grey porcelain paving with charcoal grey grout, brick-faced steps, a stone retaining wall and a porcelain side-return path

Another Sterling Projects job complete in Medway — a tired, multi-level rear garden transformed into a sharp, modern entertaining space with 90m² of Kandla Grey porcelain laid throughout, finished with a charcoal grey grout for crisp, contemporary lines that are built to last.

The Finished Garden

The finished rear patio is generous and open, with large-format Kandla Grey porcelain pavers running across the full width of the garden. The cool, riven-textured grey tones are lifted by a charcoal grey grout that defines every joint and gives the whole space a clean, modern finish. Even the inspection cover has been set into a recessed porcelain tray and tiled to match, so the manhole all but disappears into the paving — the kind of detail that separates a proper installation from a quick job.

Split-Level Steps and Retaining Wall

The garden sloped across its length, so we built the scheme over two levels. Brick-faced steps with Kandla Grey porcelain treads link the lower path up to the main patio, tying the brickwork in with the surrounding houses while keeping the porcelain as the hero surface. A natural stone retaining wall holds back the raised planting beds and gives the garden structure and a sense of permanence.

With the levels resolved, the upper patio became a flat, usable terrace big enough for a full rattan seating set, framed by the retaining wall and raised planters at the far end. It is a space the homeowners can use straight away, without steps or slopes getting in the way of the furniture.

Side-Return Path

The same Kandla Grey porcelain carries down the side return of the house, giving a wide, level path from the front of the property through to the rear garden. Running the one material throughout makes the whole plot feel connected rather than a series of patched-together surfaces.

Drainage Done Properly

Linear drainage channel set into Kandla Grey porcelain at the French doors of a Medway home

A linear drainage channel runs along the threshold at the French doors, taking surface water away from the house before it can pond against the wall. This matters in Medway: properties on the valley floor through Rochester, Strood and lower Gillingham sit on river alluvium with poor infiltration and a higher water table, so we keep finished levels below the damp-proof course and pipe water to a drain rather than relying on it to soak away. Get the drainage right and a porcelain patio stays flat and stain-free for decades.

Works Completed

  • Kandla Grey porcelain — 90m² of large-format riven porcelain laid across the patio, steps, side return and path
  • Charcoal grey grout — contemporary jointing throughout for sharp, defined lines
  • Split-level brick-faced steps — porcelain treads linking the lower path to the upper terrace
  • Natural stone retaining wall — holding back raised planting beds and structuring the garden
  • Recessed inspection cover — manhole set into a porcelain infill tray to match the paving
  • Linear threshold drainage — channel drain at the French doors with levels kept below the DPC
  • Full excavation and groundworks — strip-out, levels and an engineered sub base

Patios and Garden Landscaping in Medway

We carry out patio installations and complete garden landscaping across the whole Medway area — Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood, Rainham and the Hoo Peninsula. Medway is effectively two sites in one: free-draining chalk on the higher ground around Chatham and the Hoo peninsula, and poorly-draining river alluvium along the valley floor through Rochester, Strood and lower Gillingham. We confirm which you have on site and build the sub base and drainage to suit — which is exactly why our patios stay flat.
