This black block paving driveway in Bexley replaced a tired frontage on a red-brick semi-detached home. The design brief leaned modern — a dark, graphic paving pattern with a light contrasting border and proper surface water drainage — while keeping the finished drive fully compliant with SUDs regulations thanks to an integrated channel drain at the road edge.
Brief & Design
The homeowner wanted maximum impact against the red brickwork of the property without going ornamental. A herringbone lay in charcoal-black blocks delivers the graphic, regular pattern we were after, and a pale grey soldier-course border frames the whole driveway and sharpens the transition to the pavement.
Groundwork, Drainage & SUDs
The existing driveway was excavated down to a solid subgrade, weakness spots dug out and replaced, and a compacted Type 1 sub-base laid in layers. To meet SUDs (Sustainable Drainage) rules for driveways discharging towards the highway, a linear channel drain was installed along the road edge, piped to a soakaway so run-off is dealt with on the property rather than flowing onto the footpath.
Laying & Finish
Blocks were laid on a screeded sharp-sand bed at a 45-degree herringbone to the house elevation, with hand-cuts running tight against the grey border. The drive was compacted, jointed with kiln-dried sand and compacted again to lock the pattern in.
Final Result
The finished driveway sits cleanly between the house and the road — dark, crisp herringbone framed in pale grey, with drainage handled invisibly along the front edge. A modern, low-maintenance frontage that lifts the whole property.
