This large frontage block paving driveway in Sevenoaks gives a Tudor-style detached home enough off-road parking for multiple vehicles while framing the approach to the house. The brief was to replace an ageing, inconsistent frontage with a single unified surface that matched the character of the property — contemporary grey tones, defined borders and a clean new boundary wall to separate the drive from the roadside.

Brief & Design

The client wanted the full frontage brought up to one level and finished in a driveway that would cope with daily use by several cars without rutting or weed growth. We specified a mid-grey block in a staggered stretcher-bond lay, framed with a darker charcoal soldier-course border to draw the eye along the edges and into the property.

A new stone-capped retaining wall was included along the roadside boundary to tidy the level change and give the driveway a formal, finished edge.

Groundwork & Base

The existing surface was broken out, roots and soft spots removed, and the area excavated to a firm subgrade. A deep Type 1 MOT sub-base was laid and compacted in layers to carry the weight of multiple vehicles over a long lifespan. Falls were set away from the house to direct surface water to the front kerb.

Laying & Finish

A sharp-sand laying course was screeded dead flat before the blocks were laid in pattern, cut in tight along the borders and house elevation. Once laid, the driveway was plate-compacted with a rubber-soled wacker, brushed with kiln-dried jointing sand and consolidated again to lock every block into place.

Final Result

Finished grey block paving driveway in Sevenoaks with charcoal border and new retaining wall

The finished frontage pulls the whole property together — a wide, hard-wearing driveway in crisp grey tones, a defined darker border, and a new stone-capped wall that marks the boundary cleanly. It gives a five-bed family home the kerb appeal to match.
