Contemporary Garden Design with Artificial Grass

This contemporary garden transformation in Maidstone reworked a wide rear plot into a sharply zoned, low-maintenance outdoor living space. Grey porcelain patio at the house, twin artificial lawn panels split by a central walkway, a raised covered decking zone and a black close-board fence to tie the whole scheme together.
Brief & Design
The clients wanted a modern garden that would look good from the kitchen all year, without the usual seasonal fade. The design brief was symmetry — two identical rectangles of artificial lawn either side of a central paving spine — with a relaxed seating terrace at the house and a second covered zone at the far side for year-round use.
Groundwork & Layout
The original garden was levelled and stripped back. Edgings and sub-bases were set out first so the finished symmetry was built in from the ground up: mortar beds under the porcelain patio zones, compacted Type 1 with a granite-dust top screed under the artificial grass, and proper falls so water always runs away from the house.
Patio, Paving & Artificial Grass
Large-format light grey porcelain slabs were laid across the main patio and central walkway with tight pencil-round joints and a priming slurry under each slab — the way porcelain has to be bedded if you want it to stay sound long-term. The artificial turf was stretched, pinned at the edges, jointed invisibly and sand-dressed for a realistic look and a firm underfoot feel.
Fence, Planters & Covered Zone
The boundary was reworked in black close-board fencing on concrete posts for a strong, graphic backdrop, and the existing side decking was re-stained to match. A line of white square planters along the paving spine adds height and softens the hard lines — perfect for architectural plants like phormiums and grasses.
Final Result
The finished garden is exactly what modern family life needs — a clean, symmetrical, low-maintenance layout with two distinct outdoor rooms, space to eat and entertain at both, and no mowing, sealing or weeding to do at the weekend.
