This red herringbone block paving driveway in Canterbury turned a compact front garden into a proper off-road parking bay with a classic, hard-wearing finish. A tight-fit driveway at the side of the house, framed by new feather-edge fencing and sharpened with a dark charcoal soldier border.
Brief & Design
The client wanted to swap an awkward grass frontage and gravel area for a solid, low-maintenance drive that could take a car comfortably. We specified brindle-red blocks in a 45-degree herringbone pattern — the strongest interlock you can lay, ideal under vehicle loads — and picked out the edges with a charcoal border that ties into the dark fence.
Groundwork & Base
Groundwork is where a driveway is won or lost. We excavated down to a firm subgrade, removed soft spots and lifted overhanging root material. A compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base was built up in layers, with falls set to run surface water away from the house to the kerb line.
Laying & Finish
Blocks were bedded on a screeded sharp-sand course and laid at 45 degrees for maximum interlock. The dark charcoal soldier course was cut in tight around the perimeter to frame the pattern. The whole driveway was plate-compacted, jointed with kiln-dried sand and finished off with a second compaction to consolidate the joints.
Final Result
The finished driveway delivers exactly what a family home needs — durable off-road parking, a classic look that’ll still suit the house in twenty years, and a clean dark-bordered finish that lifts the whole frontage.
