During — Groundwork and Sub Base
The existing lawn was stripped back and the full area excavated, with a mini dumper bringing in materials and removing spoil. A compacted grano (granite dust) base was laid across the lawn area to give the artificial grass a stable, free-draining foundation — essential on Maidstone’s Gault and Wealden clay, which shrinks and swells seasonally and drains poorly. A properly built sub base prevents the settling and waterlogging that affect turf laid straight onto clay.
The Finished Garden
The finished garden is sharp and contemporary. A grey porcelain footpath in a 600 x 900mm format runs down one side of the garden, with a curve cut into the path to soften the line and lead the eye towards the garden room. The cool grey porcelain sits beautifully against the 40mm Panama artificial grass, supplied by Forevergreen, which gives a lush, hard-wearing lawn that stays green and usable all year with none of the mowing, muddy patches or seasonal upkeep of natural turf.
A neat gravel border with planting runs alongside the path, framing the porcelain and helping with drainage at the garden’s edge. The result is a clean, modern garden that’s ready to enjoy straight away and takes almost no looking after.
