Red Brick Side Extension with Modern Patio
A beautifully crafted red brick side extension with tiled roof, large windows, and a complementary modern patio area.

This red brick side extension in Bexley added a full-height ground-floor extension to the side of a detached family home. Built in matching brick with a tiled pitched roof to tie into the existing roofline, plus a brick-bordered patio wrapped around the base to finish the outside cleanly.
Brief & Design
The clients needed more usable ground-floor space without losing garden area or disturbing the character of the original property. A side extension was the right call — filling the underused strip between the house and the boundary — and the design brief was simple: match the existing brick, tie into the tile roof, and keep the proportions modest so it reads as part of the original build.
Groundwork & Foundations
Foundations were dug to building control depth, steel mesh laid, and concrete poured to a proper stepped footing that ties into the existing house. The oversite was blinded, DPM laid, insulation set in, and a concrete slab cast to form the floor base.
Brickwork & Roof
The new walls were built up in red brick to match the existing elevation as closely as possible, with a cavity properly insulated and tied in every course. A pitched timber roof was built off the new masonry, tile-hung to match the main house pitch and detailed at the junction so the addition reads as a natural part of the property rather than a bolt-on.
Windows, Render & Patio
A large window was fitted into the front elevation to pull light into the new space, matching the existing white frames on the house. Outside, a new patio was laid in pale smooth slabs with a red-brick border that echoes the brickwork of the extension and runs neatly around the base of the walls — grounding the extension into the garden rather than leaving it floating on bare earth.
Final Result

The finished extension reads as if it was always part of the house — the brickwork matches, the roof lines flow, and the new patio ties the additional footprint into the garden. Inside, the family picks up a usable, light-filled additional ground-floor room.
