The national Permitted Development rule (permeable surfacing or under 5m² impermeable draining to soft landscaping) applies, but Canterbury has an unusually dense patchwork of conservation areas — the city centre, Cathedral World Heritage buffer zone and many surrounding villages carry Article 4 directions that strip permitted rights for front-garden paving entirely. Always check Canterbury City Council's conservation-area map before committing to a design; listed-building consent is a separate requirement. The critical extra step in Canterbury is the Article 4 check with Canterbury City Council — inside the designated areas you cannot lay any new paved surface (permeable or not) without a planning application, so the highways permit alone is not enough.

Most of Canterbury sits on chalk downland with thin rendzina topsoils, transitioning into Thanet Sand and the Lambeth Group to the north towards Whitstable and Herne Bay. Free-draining chalk is close to ideal for a permeable block or resin build-up, but the topsoil layer is usually thin, so we over-excavate and specify a graded chalk/Type 3 sub-base rather than trying to dig to clay. Expect a shallow, well-drained dig compared to the Wealden parts of Kent.
