This Canterbury homeowner asked us to transform two separate areas of their beautiful Victorian semi — a tired front driveway and an unfinished rear garden — into a coordinated paved scheme that would lift the kerb appeal of the whole house. Working to a tight schedule before the Easter weekend, our team delivered both areas in a 4 day turnaround using Castacrete mellow yellow block paving with a brindle border, plus a new set of brindle key kerb steps to link the levels in the rear garden.
Before: Unfinished Rear Garden
The rear garden, sitting between the original house and a later side extension, had been left as bare ground with brick pillars marking the boundary. Without a proper paved surface the area was unusable in wet weather and detracted from an otherwise lovely Victorian semi. The brief was to create a clean, level garden patio that connected the back door, side gate and lawn in a way that suited the age and character of the building.
Front Driveway: Site Preparation and Muckaway
On the front of the property, the existing driveway was stripped out and the whole working area boarded to protect the public footpath and the homeowner’s neighbours during muckaway and aggregate deliveries. Boarding is a small detail that makes a big difference on terraced and semi-detached streets like this one — it keeps mud off the pavement, protects kerb stones, and lets us bring grab lorries and bulk bags right up to the site without disrupting the road.
Once the existing surface was cleared, the sub-base was excavated to the correct depth, levels were checked against the threshold of the front door and the fall to the road, and a compacted MOT type 1 base was installed ready for laying.
Front Driveway: Castacrete Mellow Yellow with Brindle Border
The finished front driveway is in Castacrete mellow yellow blocks with a brindle border framing the perimeter. Mellow yellow is a soft, warm tone that complements the buff and red brickwork typical of older Canterbury and Kent properties without competing with the architecture — exactly the look the homeowner was after.
A linear drainage channel runs across the entrance at the road, complying with SuDS guidance and keeping surface water off the public footway. New close-board fence panels and brick pier posts were installed at the same time, with the brindle border returning neatly into the fence line for a clean finish.
Rear Garden: Brindle Key Kerb Steps Installation
A new set of steps was needed in the rear garden to handle the change in level between the lower paved area and the upper part of the plot. We used brindle key kerb units to form the risers, bedded in on a strong concrete mix and aligned carefully to keep the tread depth consistent across each step. Key kerb is an excellent product for this type of feature — the chunky profile gives a strong, defined edge, and the brindle colour blends warm reds, browns and charcoals that pick up the tones in the surrounding brickwork.
The same brindle units were continued as a border around both the front driveway and the rear garden, tying the two areas together visually even though they sit on opposite sides of the house.
Rear Garden: Coordinated Mellow Yellow Patio
The rear garden mirrors the front driveway in materials but answers a different brief — instead of a vehicle-rated surface, this is a usable outdoor room that links the kitchen door, side gate and lawn beyond. The mellow yellow blocks brighten what was a shaded, north-facing space, and the brindle border defines the edges against the existing brick walls and side extension.
Levels were carefully set so that water falls away from the house and the side extension towards a discreet drainage point, and the paving meets the door thresholds neatly without any awkward steps or trip hazards.
Looking back across the new garden, the brindle key kerb steps lead up to the upper level and the cottage beyond. The combination of warm mellow yellow blocks underfoot and a defined brindle perimeter gives the whole space a settled, considered feel that suits the age of the property.
From the side gate the new garden reads as a proper extension of the house — clean, level and finished. The mellow yellow paving picks up the light even on overcast days, and the brindle border draws the eye through the space toward the steps and the planting beyond.
